Logga The Gothenburg Process
International Ecumenical Conference on
Arms Tranfers and Armed Violence

May 26-27th, 2009 in Bogotá, Colombia

The proliferation and the lack of control of arms each year causes thousands of deaths all over Latin America. This is one reason for having a conference on Arms Transfers in Bogotá, Colombia. The object of the seminar is to look at arms transfers from different perspectives, but also discuss the role of faith based organisations.

The first part of the conference will be in the form of an open conference. It will start off by describing the particular situation regarding arms transfers Latin America from different perspectives; political, military, industrial and civil society. Three case studies will be presented on how to combat armed violence. There will also be three sessions about the effects of armed violence, how to reduce armed violence, and the role of faith based organisations.

The objective of the second part is to have an in depth dialogue among Churches, church related organisations and ecumenical organisations on what role we might play in stopping uncontrolled, illegitimate and irresponsible arms trade. The participants will split into two groups, one discussing Small Arms and the other an Arms Trade Treaty.

On the last day there will be a public seminar at the Universidad Jameriana.
